Use of digital files is rapidly overtaking that of tape assets, and the complexity of these files is increasing, especially at the international level, where an asset might have individual files for sixteen different languages. It’s a challenge to ensure content is being distributed in the right languages with the correct captions at the right times. Language and caption quality impacts everyone in the chain, from the creator who sends the content out for localization, to the distributor, to the broadcaster who airs the content.
There have been many quality control products available for video analysis, audio quality, loudness, and more, but nothing for language and caption verification… until now. As part of the Illuminate suite, Nexidia QC™ is a software application for automated closed caption and video description verification, closed caption alignment, and language identification for broadcast and IP workflows. Nexidia QC automatically checks quality at every point in the life of the asset to ensure that the right caption file appears against the right media in the right language, and that it is properly timed from ingest to playout and beyond.
Nexidia QC compares the captions to the spoken words in the audio to verify that not only are closed captions present but that they match the audio as well. The application then determines the level of caption coverage by comparing the intersection of voice activity and aligned caption segments. Verification is based on configurable parameters outlining acceptable levels of caption accuracy, caption timing, and caption coverage. The results of the caption verification test are a pass/fail result and a report with the details and time codes of problem areas.
Nexidia QC can optionally repair caption synchronization problems by comparing the timecodes of the words spoken in the audio track to the timecodes in the caption file. Nexidia QC adjusts the timecodes in the caption file so that the captions are properly aligned with the spoken words and then returns a new, accurately-timed caption file that’s ready for distribution.
Nexidia QC can verify that the language in each audio track matches the intended language independent of any metadata. Having set up a predefined test profile indicating the possible and expected languages for each track, each track is then analyzed, verifying of the primary language spoken on that track. All tracks are checked at the same time and there is no limit to the number of tracks that can be checked for a given piece of media.
Given any reasonable amount of audible dialogue, language verification is extremely accurate, ensuring the correct language is always on the correct track. Nexidia QC also supports caption and subtitle language verification, allowing for identification of the primary language of a file.
In order to verify video description, Nexidia QC analyzes both the primary and secondary audio programs. The software compares the program audio tracks against one another, identifying all segments in which the description track has dialogue not present on the primary track and returns a pass/fail result with a detailed report containing the timecodes where video description was detected.
Nexidia QC includes an easy to use, powerful web-based user interface. Users can easily create profiles indicating which tests to execute, and can configure multiple parameters per test, all from an interface that will take only seconds to learn. Once created, profiles can be easily cloned and modified, allowing users to tune profiles based on their delivery requirements. Jobs are run by simply specifying the profile to use and the location of the files to test, and results are presented in the interface as soon as they become available.
Nexidia QC is integrated with the Telestream Vantage® file-based workflow automation system, Dalet’s AmberFin® Unified QC platform, the Evertz Mediator® content management and workflow solution, and the Aspera Orchestrator® workflow automation system. The Telestream Vantage integration enables users to utilize Nexidia QC’s unique suite of tests, enhancing Vantage’s powerful and versatile workflow capabilities. The Amberfin UQC integration allows results from Nexidia QC tests to be viewed on the Amberfin UQC timeline. This process allows users with other QC applications, such as Aurora, Baton, Cerify, or Vidchecker to view Nexidia’s test results on a timeline together with results from those applications. For users with custom integration needs, the Nexidia QC provides an XML-based REST API to make interfacing with any application quick and straightforward. QC can be used to integrate with any workflow and orchestration software – even custom software – so that QC operations and resulting metadata can continue to move through an organization’s file-based workflow without human intervention.
Nexidia’s caption verification and caption alignment features are based on Nexidia’s patented phonetic process that uses phonemes instead of words to enable QC to handle proper names, slang, and individual accents. Nexidia QC currently supports more than twenty languages for the closed caption tests, and adding support for new languages is a straightforward process. Nexidia QC currently supports fifteen languages for language verification and with partner assistance new languages can usually be added in less than thirty days. Click here for a full list of supported languages.
While a single server can process thousands of hours of content per day and will more than likely meet most customers’ needs, additional servers can be added to provide higher availability or throughput. Nexidia QC can be installed and operated on premises or in the cloud. For full system requirements see the resources section below.
